Quick Overview

At one time, Leeds had three large stations, Central, Wellington and City, many suburban stations and goods depots, plus five engine sheds! In 1962, Leeds Central still handled extensive passenger services with freight handled at the adjacent Wellington Street Goods depot, both locations filmed from Holbeck High and Low Level Stations. All five loco sheds are viewed together with scenes at Hunslet Goods Depot plus intensive traffic through the numerous junctions in and around Holbeck.

Product Description

Until the 1960s, Leeds could boast three large stations: Central, Wellington and New, together with many suburban stations, five locomotive depots: Copley Hill, Holbeck, Neville Hill, Stourton, Farnley Junction plus numerous goods depots. In 1962, with changes on the horizon, we see some of the many passenger and freight trains that arrived and departed to all parts of the country. Leeds Central still had extensive suburban services, as well as its long distance expresses running in and out of its cramped location. The Wellington Street goods depots still handled large amounts of freight, and although closed to passengers in July 1958 Holbeck High and Low Level platforms provided a superb location to film from. Wellington and New Stations combined to become Leeds City and all trains to and from the West and North had to pass through Holbeck’s many junctions. We see South to North ‘non-stops’, look at all five locomotive depots, see heavy machinery being boxed and loaded at Hunslet Goods and the beginning of the rationalisation of trackwork, points and signals. Locomotive classes on view include – A1, A3, A4, B1, B16, J50, K1, K4, Q6, V2, Jubilee, Royal Scot, 5MT, 8F, 2-6-4 tank, Crab, Jinty, B.R. Standards and Duchess as well as many early diesel locos. Filmed and recorded between 1961 and 1967.
