Product Description

This programme looks at the area South of the River Tyne from Gateshead to Tyne Dock. We journey to North Durham in the cab of a Class V2 loco-hauled freight train from York to Tyne Yard, with Deltics, Class 40s and DP2 roaring past. At Gateshead we watch freight train movements to and from Dunston crossing the King Edward Bridge and to Sunderland and Tyne Dock. After looking at Gateshead Shed we see a Class J27 on bonus working pass Felling Station at around 40 mph. Boldon Station and Colliery, Pontop Crossing and Tyne Dock Shed are viewed, together with the numerous freight trains, which ran in the early 1960s. A Q7 shunts, a J25 arrives on a Trip Freight and a T1 4-8-0 Tank loco rescues a stalled freight on one of the many short, steep inclines in this area. Electric locomotives are seen at Monkton Coke Works and Westoe Colliery and we watch iron ore being loaded into the bogie hopper wagons at Tyne Dock. At Consett the ore is discharged on the Gantry at the steel works and various trains are seen on the steep inclines leading up to the steel town, with film of the last steam hauled iron ore train closing the programme. Filmed and recorded between 1959 and 1967.
